Nov 2008
Opened in 1996, the Amsterdam Arena is the home for AFC Ajax. It has a retractable roof and a capacity of 51,715 seats. The roof doesn't come without costs. Artificial sunlight and wind have to be used to keep the grass in good condition.
There are two options to visit the stadium. First of course, is to go to an Ajax game. In November 2008, I went to see Ajax play against MSK Zilina, for an UEFA Cup group stage game. The stadium was about 70% full, or even less. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was great. Luis Suarez scored the only goal in this game, and Ajax won by 1-0.
If you don't get to see a football match here, you can also take a look inside the arena by attending a guided tour. The tour includes a visit to the Ajax museum, where you can see numerous trophies and memorabilia. A special corner is dedicated to Marco van Basten, who played for Ajax from 1982 to 1987.
